Kuala Lumpur, 23 May (HS). Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu reached the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters Super 500 badminton tournament here on Thursday. Sindhu defeated Sim Yu Jin of Korea in the pre-quarterfinals.
World number 15 Sindhu defeated Sim 21-13, 12-21, 21-14 in a match that lasted 59 minutes. This was Sindhu's third win over the Korean player.
Sindhu, a 28-year-old player from Hyderabad, has been struggling since making a comeback from a knee injury in October last year.
Fifth seed Sindhu will face top seed Han Yu in the quarterfinals. Han Yu had defeated Sindhu at the Asia Badminton Championships in Ningbo last month.
Sindhu, who last won the title at the 2022 Singapore Open, has a commanding 5-1 record against Han, who is now ranked 6th in the world rankings.
In other results, the mixed doubles pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy lost 9-21, 15-21 to the top-seeded Malaysian pair of Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, while in the women's doubles, Simran Singhi and Ritika Thakar lost to the Malaysian pair. Lost to Pearly Tan and Thina Muralitharan 17-21,11-21.
