was in contact with an infected animal
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said a dairy worker was under observation after he came in contact with cattle infected with H5N1. The infected person reported his symptoms to local health authorities. The CDC said in a release that two samples were taken from the victim for testing. One was taken from the victim's nose and the other from his eye. A nasal sample was sent to the state health department laboratory, where it was found negative for the influenza virus. Eye samples were sent to the CDC for testing, where infection with the A (H5) virus was confirmed.
The first infection occurred in Texas
Earlier in April, the first human case of bird flu was reported in Texas, USA. This person was associated with animals. The CDC reports that the person found infected in Texas may have worked with cows infected with the bird flu virus. This was the first time that this virus was found in cows. This is also the first case of bird flu spreading from cow to human. CDC experts reporting on the investigation of the infected person said that the genome of the influenza virus in the patient was sequenced. The virus found in this person's body is almost identical to the virus found in cows and birds in Texas.
