Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa pair in quarterfinals of Thailand Open

Bangkok, May 17 (Hindustan Reporter) Indian women's doubles pair Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa reached the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open 2024 badminton tournament on Thursday.

Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa defeated Hung En-Tzu and Lin Yu-Pei of Chinese Taipei 21-19, 21-17. The fourth seeded Indian pair had received a bye in the preliminary round.

Meanwhile, Rutaparna and Swetaparna Panda made an exit in the second round of women's doubles after losing to second seeded Japan's Rin Iwanaga and Kei Nakanishi 21-16, 21-13.

In the men's category, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

Satwik-Chirag defeated China's Xie Hao Nan and Zeng Wei Han 21-16, 21-11 to reach the last eight stage.

Satwik-Chirag will aim to add another Thailand Open title to their account. He had earlier won it in 2019. Additionally, former junior world number two Miraba Luwang Masnam continued her impressive run in the tournament. After defeating his senior compatriot HS Prannoy in the previous round, he defeated world number 54 Mads Christensen of Denmark 21-14, 22-20 to reach the quarter-finals.

Indian challenge in women's singles ended when Ashmita Chaliha lost to world number seven Han Yu of China 15-21, 21-12, 12-21.

India's mixed doubles pair of Satish Kumar Karunakaran and Adya Varinath lost their second round match to Indonesia's Rinov Rivaldi and Pitha Haningtyas 21-19, 21-17.

The Thailand Open started in Bangkok on May 14 and will run till May 19.
