According to media reports, for the first time India will take control of a port on foreign soil. Chabahar port will strengthen India's connectivity with the Eurasian region including Iran and Central Asia.
India will give tough competition to Pakistan-China!
Through Chabahar Port, India will be able to compete with Pakistan's Gwadar Port and China's Belt and Road Project. Through Chabahar port, India will be able to reach Afghanistan and Central Asia bypassing Pakistan. This port will be connected to INSTC (International North South Transport Corridor) in the near future, thereby increasing India's reach to St. Petersburg, Russia.
Prime Minister Modi had signed an agreement to develop the port
Chabahar Project is an ambitious project of the Government of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Iran in 2016, where he signed an agreement to develop the Chabahar port. Then in the year 2018, former President of Iran Hassan Rouhani came to India. He discussed India's role on Chabahar port in New Delhi.
India takes control of Shaheed Beheshti Terminal
There will be a new MoU between India and Iran for 10 years and it can be extended further. Under this agreement, India has got control only of Shaheed Beheshti Terminal. Afghanistan is also a partner in this port. In 2016, India signed a trilateral agreement with Iran and Afghanistan to develop the Shahid Beheshti Termil.
Importance of Chabahar Port
Chabahar Port is connected to the Gulf of Oman and is Iran's first deep water port. This port connects Iran to other countries by sea route. This port also connects Iran's border with Pakistan. The construction of Gwadar port in Pakistan is in the hands of China. Chabahar Airport is part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). It is a project connecting the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea to Iran and Northern Europe to Russia via St. Petersburg.
