Amidst the war against Ukraine, Putin took a big decision, removed the Defense Minister, what is his strategy?

Vladimir Putin: President Vladimir Putin has dismissed his Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu amid the Russia-Ukraine war. He appointed Andrei Belousou as the new Defense Minister. Belousou has been the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia. Putin removed Sergei Shoigu as defense minister because he wanted to appoint him secretary of the powerful Security Council. At present Nikolai Patrushev holds this post. Putin has greater confidence in Sergei Shoigu to handle security industry problems amid the war. He is considered close to Putin.

The new Defense Minister Belsau is considered an expert on the economic front. Meanwhile, people are surprised by the decision to make him the Defense Minister. Russia has been waging a war against Ukraine since February 2022. Any change made in the cabinet is sure to be approved in the Parliament also. Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will remain in their posts.

It is noteworthy that the new role given to Shoigu is a higher position than that of Defense Minister. A Kremlin spokesman said the change was appropriate given the situation in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. This was 7.4 percent of the country's expenditure on the entire army and other security forces. Meanwhile, Putin wants someone with economic savvy to take over the defense ministry and help reduce overspending. Putin has re-appointed former President Mikhail Mishustin as the country's Prime Minister and sent his name to the lower house of parliament for approval.

In accordance with Russian law, Mishustin, 58, resigned from his Cabinet on Tuesday as Putin began his fifth term as president. Mishustin was the Prime Minister for the last four years. However, political insiders expected Mishustin to be reappointed. He believes that Putin likes to distance himself from his skills and debates. Mishustin, the former head of Russia's tax service, stayed away from political statements during his previous tenure and did not even give media interviews.
