New Delhi: On one hand, the playoff ticket is at stake, while on the other hand, Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has been fined for violating the IPL code of conduct. Pant has been suspended for one. In such a situation, he will not be able to play for Delhi Capitals in the next match. His team did not finish in overtime against Rajasthan Royals on 7 May 2024 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
This was his team's third offense of the season under the IPL code of conduct related to slow over-rate, so Rishabh Pant was fined Rs 30 lakh and suspended for one match. The rest of the playing XI, including the influential players, have been individually fined Rs 12 lakh or 50 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lower.
As per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, Delhi Capitals filed an appeal challenging the match referee's decision. After this the appeal was sent to the BCCI Ombudsman for review. The Ombudsman held a virtual hearing and confirmed that the match referee's decision was correct.
It is worth noting that Delhi Capitals is currently at fifth position in the table with 12 points with 6 wins from 12 matches. It has two matches left in the league and is yet to qualify for the playoffs. They have to play their two matches against RCB on 12th May and Lucknow on 14th May. To keep the playoff hopes alive, Delhi will have to win both these matches. A defeat can knock Delhi out of the tournament.
