Martin Pistorius: A man has shared the reality of being trapped 'like a ghost' in his own body for more than a decade. He says that during this time he was unable to talk, move or tell anyone that he was awake. But after 10 years he was able to get treatment and despite being on a wheel chair, he was able to lead a normal life.
Martin Pistorius, 47, of Johannesburg, South Africa, was 12 years old. Then he came home from school with a sore throat. His condition started deteriorating rapidly. Tests revealed he had cryptococcal meningitis and cerebral tuberculosis. His body became weak and he lost the ability to speak and control his movements, leaving him mute and confined to a wheelchair.
His parents said he has an undiagnosed terminal illness, leaving him with the mental condition of a child and that he has less than two years to live. But four years later his brain returned, leaving him unable to communicate or move, leaving him a prisoner in his own body.
Martin said people who didn't care mistreated him, even assuming they had no knowledge of his background. Unless she was sexually abused. He was waiting for the day when someone would notice that his brain had activated again, so that he could be freed from his reality. His world changed in 2001, when he was 25, when he stayed at a day center.
There, aromatherapist Verena van der Walt realized he was responding to what she was saying. Then they were tested. Within a year, he began using a computer program to communicate and his body began to regain strength. Today he lives the life of a husband, father and successful businessman.
