To enter this temple, men have to do 16 adornments like women.
Why do men have to wear makeup?
Men are not allowed to enter this temple. In this temple only women and eunuchs can enter the premises to worship the goddess. If a man wants to worship or worship the Goddess then he has to do 16 adornments just like women.
Being a woman gives you this blessing
There is a belief about this tradition that any man who goes to this temple disguised as a woman and wears sixteen adornments, gets promotion in the job and desired promotion. Also, if there is any problem related to marriage, it also gets resolved. Obstacles coming in love marriage are removed. Apart from this, if there is any problem or sorrow in married life, then by the grace of Goddess, sweetness comes in married life.
The festival of Chamyavilakku is celebrated every year especially at Sri Kottankulangara Devi Temple. A large number of male devotees come from far and wide to participate in it. To enter the temple, they not only have to wear women's clothes but also have to do 16 make-up along with jewellery, gajra etc. During this festival a group of men take out a procession carrying lamps in their hands. Here is a part of their sacred offering to the Goddess in response to their prayers.
makeup room in temple is bad
A separate makeup room is made for male devotees coming from other cities who do not have makeup materials. Where they do 16 makeup like women. There may be rules and conditions regarding entry into this temple regarding clothing etc. but there is no age restriction. Here men of all ages can enter dressed as women and worship the Goddess.
The goddess herself appeared
The local people here say that the idol of Mother Goddess herself appeared in this temple. First of all, when some shepherds saw this idol, they worshiped the goddess by offering clothes, flowers etc. After some time this temple was built. Another popular belief about this temple is that when some people broke a coconut on the rock, blood started flowing from the rock. After seeing this miracle, people started worshiping this Shaktipeeth. After this incident the faith in this temple has increased a lot.
