India has long been demanding permanent membership in the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world. There are currently 15 countries in the United Nations Security Council. In which veto power rests with five permanent members. It also includes 10 non-permanent member countries elected for a two-year term.
The five permanent members of the UNSC include China, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and the United States. The non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are elected by the UNGA for a 2-year term.
Ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections, the BJP in its election manifesto has promised to secure permanent membership for the country in the United Nations Security Council.
