UNSC Permanent Membership: Tesla CEO Elon Musk has demanded India's permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council. America has also reacted to his statement. US State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said on Wednesday that the US has introduced reforms in other UN bodies including the UNSC. Patel said, the President has already talked about this in his remarks to the United Nations General Assembly. The secretary has also told about this. Despite being the most populous country on earth, India does not have permanent membership. Africa should also collectively get permanent membership.

India has long been demanding permanent membership in the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world. There are currently 15 countries in the United Nations Security Council. In which veto power rests with five permanent members. It also includes 10 non-permanent member countries elected for a two-year term.

The five permanent members of the UNSC include China, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and the United States. The non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are elected by the UNGA for a 2-year term.

Ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections, the BJP in its election manifesto has promised to secure permanent membership for the country in the United Nations Security Council. In its election manifesto released on April 14, the BJP said, “We are committed to securing permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council to elevate India's position in global decision-making.”

Earlier in January, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar stressed the growing global support for India's permanent membership of the UN Security Council and said that sometimes things are not given generously. It has to be caught.
