Ethiopia's Sisay Lema won the Boston Marathon men's title for the first time in his career. He clocked a time of two hours 6:17 minutes. Kenya's Helen Obiri was successful in retaining her 2023 title in women. Lema had earlier won the London Marathon in 2021. Lema was 41 seconds ahead of second-place Mohammed Issa and one minute and five seconds ahead of third-place double defending champion Evans Chabit.
The women's race was between defending champion Obiri and former New York City Marathon champion Sharon Lockadie. Kenyan runner Obiri won the title with a timing of 2 hours 22:37 minutes. Sharon was eight seconds behind and had to settle for second place. Obiri, 34, became the second sprinter to win two consecutive titles. Earlier, Catherine Dereba had won two marathons in 2004 and 2005. More than 30 thousand athletes from 123 countries participated in this 128th marathon.
