Mumbai: The Indian government has ruled out the possibility of sugar exports in the current sugar season ending in September. Sources in the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said that despite the demand of the industry, the government is not ready to accept it at present.
ISMA had submitted a proposal to the government to allow export of one million tonnes of sugar in the current sugar season. However, keeping the Lok Sabha elections in mind, the government has refused to think anything about this.
ISMA had requested for the sugar export concession in view of the expectation of huge sugar stocks at the end of the season.
In the current 2023-24 season, a total of 3 crore tonnes of sugar has been produced in the country till March. The country's sugar production in the current season is estimated to be more than 32 million tonnes.
However, the government is reportedly considering allowing the surplus sugar to be diverted to ethanol production.
Given that the monsoon of 2024 is expected to be good, it is expected that the coming season will also see normal crushing operations.
