There are more than 10 lakh Indians living in America who have to wait for years for a green card. This information has come out from the data of American Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
According to a Forbes report, USCIS data has revealed that hundreds of thousands of highly skilled professionals, including doctors, engineers and scientists from India, may have to wait longer to get green cards in the US.
According to a Forbes report, the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) analyzed USCIS data as of November 2 and found that more than 12 lakh Indians are waiting for a green card.
The first priority for Indians is EB-1 category. In this category, green cards are given to people working in positions like professor, researcher, manager etc. Under this category, 1,43,497 Indians are waiting to get green card.
Next comes the EB-2 category. In which green cards are given to people associated with fields like science, arts and business. In which 8,38,784 Indians are in the queue.
The third category is the EB-3, which is a green card issued to professionals with a bachelor's degree. There are 1,38,581 Indians in this category.
NFAP said that as per USCIS data, a total of 12,59,443 Indians had green card backlog as of November 2, 2023.
According to Forbes report, by 2030 this number will increase to 22 lakh, which means 22 lakh people will be waiting to get a green card. Which may take 195 years to complete.
The waiting period for Indians is very long compared to other countries including China as each country has a fixed quota. America issues green cards to 1.40 lakh citizens every year. According to American law, seven percent quota has been fixed for every country.
Green card is an official document for permanent residence in the United States. Under this document the visa holder is given the right to permanent residence.
