New Delhi: Sowing of summer crops is going on in full swing. In the current summer season, an increase is being seen in the cultivation of pulses, oilseed crops and paddy. The increase in area under pulses amid rising prices of pulses is good news for consumers.
In the current summer season, the area under paddy has increased by about 11 percent to 29.44 lakh hectares. The main pulse crop of this season is moong. In the summer season, till April 5, moong has been sown in 6.52 lakh hectares. In the previous same period this figure was 6.33 lakh hectares. Apparently, the area under mango has increased by 3 percent in this summer season.
The area of the second major pulse crop of this season has increased by 5.6 percent. Till April 5, urad had been sown in 2.23 lakh hectares, whereas by this date last year, urad had been sown in 2.11 lakh hectares.
The total sowing of pulses in the current summer season so far has been recorded at 8.97 lakh hectares, which is 3.10 percent more than the total sowing of 8.70 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
An increase in the area of oilseed crops is also being seen in the current summer season. Till this week, a total of 8.48 lakh hectares of oilseeds have been sown, which is more than the total of 8.26 lakh hectares of oilseeds sown in the same period last year.
Groundnut is the largest oilseed crop of summer season. Till this week, groundnut has been sown in 3.89 lakh hectares. In the previous same period this figure was 3.77 lakh hectares.
