Jay Shah congratulates 1984 Asia Cup winning Indian team

New Delhi, 13 April (HS). Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has congratulated the Indian team which won the first edition of the Asia Cup by defeating Pakistan on this day in 1984.

The inaugural edition of the Asia Cup featured Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. India and Pakistan reached the finals by defeating Sri Lanka in their respective matches. India defended the target of 189 runs and won the title by defeating Pakistan by 54 runs thanks to the match-winning performances of former Indian cricketers Ravi Shastri and Roger Binny.

Jay Shah wished the team on Was. “Ravi Shastri’s exceptional left-arm spin and Roger Binny’s brilliantly impeccable seam bowling further cemented Team India’s success – as the pair emerged as the joint-highest wicket-takers in the tournament.”

Let us tell you that while batting first in Sharjah, India had scored 188 runs for 4 wickets due to the excellent batting of Surinder Khanna (56) and Sandeep Patil (43).

The Indian team is the most successful team in the Asia Cup, having won the cup seven times. Sri Lanka is in second place having won the prized trophy five times, while Pakistan has also won the Asia Cup twice.
