‘Time cycle’ of illicit liquor: How did this tragic accident happen?
This whole heart-wrenching incident happened in Katkamdag block. jump village Is of. According to information received from police and local sources, the septic tank in this house was being used to illegally make Mahua liquor instead of human excreta and keep it hidden. The family had stored a large quantity of Mahua’s ‘Java’ (raw material for making liquor) inside the tank.
Due to unscientific and home-made rotting of Mahua inside the tank which was closed for a long time, highly poisonous gas (probably a deadly mixture of carbon monoxide and methane) was formed there. Third victim (uncle/brother-in-law): Seeing both the mother and son suffering and unconscious inside, Chameli Devi’s brother-in-law (uncle of the children) also jumped into the tank to take both of them out. The poisonous gas did not give them a chance to recover and they also collapsed there.
Husband jumped after seeing his wife, son and brother dying; admitted to hospital
When Chameli Devi’s husband, standing outside the tank, saw his wife, his own son and brother dying in front of his eyes, he became completely distraught. Without thinking, he jumped into the tank to save all three. However, as soon as he fell down, his condition started deteriorating due to the effect of gas and he started becoming unconscious. It was fortunate that other villagers who reached the spot showed promptness and somehow pulled him out in time with the help of ropes.
