Nowadays, fruits and vegetables are being grown in the market in two ways, one is traditional (desi) method and the other is advanced technology (hybrid). Talking about brinjal, both the varieties are available in abundance in the market. But often due to lack of correct information, people bring home hybrid brinjal in the name of local brinjal.
Although both are good for health, but in terms of taste, aroma and ripeness, there is no comparison with desi brinjal. An experienced farmer from Orai, Uttar Pradesh has told 4 very easy ways to identify the difference between local and hybrid brinjal, knowing which you will also be saved from getting cheated in the market.
What is the main difference between local and hybrid brinjal?
The biggest difference between hybrid and desi brinjal is their genetics and method of cultivation:
-
Hybrid Brinjal: These are grown from special seeds prepared by crossing two different improved varieties. Their yield is very high and only 60 to 80 grams of hybrid seeds are required for one acre of field.
-
Desi Brinjal: These are grown naturally with the help of our age old traditional and local seeds.
Let us know those 4 methods told by the farmer by which you can identify them immediately.
1. Shape and Texture
-
Desi Brinjal: Their size is usually small or medium. Due to natural growth, they may be a little crooked. The size of local brinjal from the same plant or same field is not the same.
-
Hybrid Brinjal: They are quite large in appearance, well shaped and of perfect shape. Their weight and size are almost the same, which is due to scientifically prepared seeds.
2. Color and Shine
-
Desi Brinjal: Their color looks light and completely natural. There is no artificial or excessive shine in them and their upper skin looks normal.
-
Hybrid Brinjal: If any brinjal in the market looks shiny, very clean and fresh, then understand that it is a hybrid. When touched, its surface feels very smooth and waxy.
3. Taste and Aroma
-
Desi Brinjal: According to the farmer, desi brinjals give a very delicious and sweet taste after being prepared. There is no bitterness in them at all and they have their own sweet smell.
-
Hybrid Brinjal: The taste of hybrid brinjal may be slightly bland or slightly bitter. If you make bharta or vegetable out of it, the traditional desi taste is missing.
4. Seeds and Pulp
-
Desi Brinjal: When you cut desi brinjal, very few and very small seeds will be visible inside it. Its pulp is very soft, which becomes velvety and soft after cooking. This is the reason why there is always a demand for desi brinjal for Bharta.
-
Hybrid Brinjal: When cut, they are full of seeds inside and the size of the seeds is also large. Its pulp is very tight, due to which even after cooking it does not become as soft as the local one.
