Another very serious and shameful case of ragging with first year MBBS junior students has come to light in Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, Gorakhpur. The entire college administration has been thrown into a tizzy after a confidential complaint email was sent by an unknown person to the National Medical Commission (NMC).
In this complaint, about one and a half dozen (18) senior students of the year 2022, 2023 and 2024 batch have been directly accused of severely harassing the juniors. Considering the sensitivity of the matter, a copy of this complaint has also been sent to the University Grants Commission (UGC). Taking this matter extremely seriously, NMC has issued strict orders to the college administration to immediately conduct an impartial investigation and take strict legal action against the guilty students. After this, the college principal hurriedly called an emergency meeting of the Anti Ragging Committee on Tuesday.
Rajendra Hostel became torture room: Serious allegations of abuse and sexual communication
In the detailed complaint sent to NMC, it has been told that newly admitted (first year) students of MBBS 2025 batch live in Rajendra Hostel of the Medical College. It is alleged that these junior students have been victims of harassment and ragging by seniors for a long time. According to the complaint, the accused senior students forcibly enter the hostel late at night every day.
They then mentally and physically harass the junior students, which includes using derogatory words, abusive language, forced sexual conversation (obscene talk) and making them stand in extremely uncomfortable physical positions for hours. In this complaint email, the names of one and a half dozen senior students who indulged in ragging have been clearly mentioned.
As soon as the complaint was received, the accused seniors became active, threatened the juniors on phone
As soon as the complaint of ragging and the stern letter from NMC became public in the college campus, there was panic among the group of accused senior students. Seeing themselves trapped, many senior students, through their acquaintances and other means, got the first year students to call and put heavy pressure on them to withdraw the complaint immediately.
The seniors openly threatened the junior students that if the matter escalated or reached the police, they would completely ruin their careers. After these threats, many junior students living in the hostel are very scared and scared. Amidst this atmosphere of fear, on Tuesday, some first year students formed a group and met the Principal and submitted a written letter saying that this complaint had not been lodged by them.
Secret meeting of Anti Ragging Committee; kept outsiders away
Principal Dr. Ramkumar Jaiswal, in view of the seriousness of the matter, held an important review meeting of the anti-ragging committee of the college on Tuesday. Apart from the Principal, senior doctors associated with the college management like Dr. Sunil Arya, Dr. Pawan Pradhan, Dr. Bindu Singh, Dr. Manoj Yadav and Dr. Rajkumar Yadav were present in this meeting.
However, a big question is also being raised regarding this meeting because as per the rules, external members included in the committee (such as representatives of local administration or police) were not invited to this emergency meeting. Only internal teachers of the college attended the meeting. The college administration says that this was the first preliminary meeting of the committee, in which the official letter of NMC and the complaint of the students have been taken on record and internal investigation process has been initiated with immediate effect.
Action has already been taken against 6 students, college administration proved to be a failure
According to information received from college sources, NMC had sent an email to the BRD Medical College administration on May 23 itself, instructing them to take strict action under the ‘zero tolerance’ policy in this entire matter. The surprising thing is that out of the senior students whose names have been written as accused in this email, there are six students against whom serious cases of ragging have already been registered.
These accused seniors had also done ragging with some students of the year 2025 batch in the past, the solid CCTV footage of which is still safe with the college administration. About seven months ago, the college administration had considered these students guilty and released them after merely imposing some fine. This time the same lax action of the administration has proved to be a complete failure in stopping ragging and the same criminals have once again been seriously accused of harassing the juniors.
