Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) is going through a very challenging phase in the politics of West Bengal. Since the results of the assembly elections, the fire of dissatisfaction has been burning within the party, which now seems to be taking a huge form. There is a strong discussion in the political circles that the senior leaders of the party have become disillusioned and the script of defection is being written on a large scale.
18 veteran leaders opened the way for rebellion
The internal discord within the party has increased to such an extent that more than a dozen MLAs and senior leaders have started openly questioning the policies. According to reports, at least 18 big faces including Sukhendu Sheikh Roy, MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Dev Adhikari, Kalyan Banerjee, Rachna Banerjee, Kunal Ghosh and Ritabrata Banerjee are said to be very angry with the party leadership. The inclusion of names like Arunav Sen, Sandipan Saha, Niamat Shaikh, former minister Krishnendu Narayan Choudhary, Manoj Tiwari, Ravindranath Ghosh, Atin Ghosh, Khageshwar Roy, Saurav Chakraborty, Ratna Chatterjee and Tapan Chatterjee is being considered a big blow for TMC.
Speculation of 20 MPs changing sides
If sources are to be believed, there is preparation for a major split in the TMC camp. According to a recent report in Sanghvaad Pratidin, 12 TMC MPs are in touch with the BJP or are on their way to extend support. This trend is not going to stop here, there is talk that this figure may reach 20 MPs. Although there is no official confirmation yet, the silence of these leaders is enough to give Mamata Banerjee sleepless nights.
100 councilors resign before civic elections
The crisis is not limited to just the MLAs and MPs, but the party seems to be weakening at the grassroots level also. It is reported that more than 100 councilors have resigned from their posts in the last few days. The most shocking thing is that these resignations are happening at a time when civic elections are around the corner. The angry councilors are raising questions not only on the top leadership of the party but also on the ‘Diamond Harbor Model’ of MP Abhishek Banerjee. Although Mamata Banerjee has appealed to everyone to remain united, the ground situation seems contrary to her claims.
Finding a candidate in Nandigram is a big challenge
Amidst all this, Nandigram seat has become the biggest puzzle for Mamata Banerjee. The party is not getting any big face as a candidate for the by-election. Since its defeat at the hands of Shubhendu Adhikari in the year 2021, TMC has been struggling to maintain its hold on this seat. No big leader is ready to take the risk for this vacancy after Shubhendu Adhikari’s re-win in 2026 and leaving the Bhawanipur seat, which shows the weakening strategic hold of Mamata Banerjee.
