Big news is coming from Canada. New data from the Canada Border Services Agency shows there are 28,145 active warrants issued for unsuccessful asylum claimants in Canada. In a response to the commission's mandate paper, presented by Conservative MP Brad Redekop, the border service highlighted the number of unsuccessful asylum seekers in the country.
The CBSA wrote in its response that “a CBSA officer may issue a warrant for the arrest and detention of a foreign national if the officer has reasonable grounds to believe that the person is ineligible under the IRPA and is either a threat to the public or Or immigration. “There is no possibility of appearing for a process like removal from Canada.”
The CBSA said there are 8,839 asylum claimants pending eligibility decisions as well as 18,684 claimants whose claims have been rejected and who have an “enforceable removal order.” Of the unsuccessful asylum claimants, 73 are currently detained. Another 12,882 people are enrolled in the alternative detention program, the majority of whom are failed refugee claimants. The agency said the figures are not accurate because the responses were compiled in a quick time frame.
