The Indian Navy rescued at least 23 Pakistani fishermen from Somali pirates during a 12-hour long operation in the Arabian Sea. “After more than 12 hours of intensive heavy tactical measures as per SOP, the pirates aboard the hijacked FV were forced to surrender. The crew, including 23 Pakistani nationals, have been rescued safely, the Indian Navy said in a statement.
The rescue operation began in the early hours of 29 March. Indian Navy's warship INS Sumedha intercepted the hijacked ship FV Al-Kambar. The missile frigate INS Trishul soon joined the operation.

At the time of the incident, the Iranian fishing vessel was approximately 90 nautical miles south-west of Socotra and nine armed pirates boarded the fishing vessel. The hijacked ship was intercepted on 29 March.
The Indian Navy further said, “The Indian Navy is committed to ensuring maritime security in the region and the safety of sailors, irrespective of their nationality.”
The Indian Navy has conducted several operations to thwart piracy in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The Indian Navy had also responded to a distress call from the Gulf of Aden earlier this year, where a merchant ship was set on fire after being hit by a missile. The Navy rescued 21 crew members, including an Indian national.
