Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena of helping Sri Lanka in political, social and economic fields. Xi Jinping has said that China will always stand with Sri Lanka to protect its integrity and sovereignty.

Meeting held between China and Sri Lanka

China and Sri Lanka agreed to continue working under the framework of friendship, peace and mutual respect in international affairs during a meeting in Beijing on Wednesday. They have also agreed not to interfere in each other's internal affairs.

Sri Lanka issued a statement saying that the Chinese government has assured that it will continue to support Sri Lanka's political, social and economic efforts. China will always stand up to safeguard the independence, integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka. The Chinese President has assured that China will support the necessary plans for the development of Sri Lanka.

9 new agreements signed between the two countries

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said, “China is willing to work with Sri Lanka to advance the rubber rice agreement, characterized by strengthening political trust, building self-reliance and unity.” Earlier on Tuesday, Sri Lankan PM Gunawardene had met Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang. Both countries signed 9 new agreements. At present no official information has been given regarding these agreements.

When Sri Lanka declared itself a defaulter in 2022, China was Sri Lanka's largest lender. Sri Lanka had a debt of US$40 billion, of which 52 percent was due to China alone. After this economic decline, China praised Sri Lanka for the way it made economic progress.
