Former Team India opener Robin Uthappa has given a sensational statement saying that Virat Kohli had an important role in ending the international career of Indian cricket great Yuvraj Singh. Uthappa claims that when Yuvraj tried to return to the team after recovering from cancer, Virat did not give him any concessions on fitness standards.
Yuvraj’s struggle after his battle with cancer
Robin Uthappa told in an interview to Lalantop that Yuvraj Singh had tried to return to the team after defeating cancer. He said:
“Yuvraj Singh is the player who won us two World Cups. He also fought against his illness. For a player who faced the biggest challenges of his career and life, some sympathy was needed.”
But, according to Uthappa, when Virat Kohli became the captain, he refused to give any leeway to Yuvraj.
No relaxation given in fitness standards
Uthappa revealed that Yuvraj Singh had requested to reduce the standards of the fitness test by two marks. But Virat clearly refused this.
“Yuvi Pa had requested to reduce the level of fitness test a bit, but he was not given any relaxation. He passed the test, came into the team, but his performance in the tournament was not good. After this he was completely dropped from the team.”
Questions raised on leadership
Uthappa raised questions on the leadership system of the Indian team at that time. He said:
“Whoever was in the leadership group never included Yuvraj again. At that time Virat Kohli was the captain of the team. Because of his strong personality and decisions, everything went his way.”
Why did Yuvraj Singh get strict conditions?
- Virat Kohli had taken a clear stand regarding fitness standards.
- During his captaincy, the yo-yo test became a mandatory fitness criterion for the Indian team.
- However, Uthappa believes that a player like Yuvraj, who did so much for the team, should have got some leniency in this matter.
Did Yuvraj get proper time?
According to Uthappa, Yuvraj was not given enough time to cement his place in the team. He said:
“Yuvraj did not perform well in a tournament, and he was dropped completely. “They needed time and support, but they didn’t get it.”
