londonbritain Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Wednesday that his government is committed to taking action to tackle extremist activities that try to take over the country's democratic institutions.
Responding to 'Prime Minister's Questions' in the House of Commons on Thursday, Sunak referred to reports of a new definition of terrorism being tabled in Parliament and insisted the new strategy would not impact freedom of expression.
Militant activities increased
The new measures are expected to ban groups or individuals who promote ideologies based on intolerance, hatred or violence and clearly set out which groups and individuals the British government can support or fund. “There has indeed been an increase in extremist activity that is trying to take over our democratic institutions,” Sunak said.
It is important that we have the tools to deal with this threat. He said that this is not at all about silencing those who have private and peaceful views. Nor will it affect the freedom of expression, which we on behalf of the House will always strive to protect.
'New definition of terrorism is a threat to the Muslim community'
Sunak's comments follow a joint statement from Justin Welby and Stephen Cottrell, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, warning that the new expanded definition of terrorism poses a threat to the country's Muslim communities.
The two said in a statement that the proposed new definition not only inadvertently jeopardizes freedom of speech, but also the right to worship and peaceful protest.
