Speaking at the CD Deshmukh Auditorium, the CDS also highlighted in detail the evolving nature of war and India’s preparedness for future conflicts. CDS Chauhan talked about three key technological trends that will reshape future warfare and said they will include robotics and automation, speed and velocity and intelligent warfare.
Now the war will not be between humans but between machines
Anil Chauhan said that war has always been a competition between humans. One may be better armed, equipped with better body armour, a sword, spear or sophisticated rifle or have better mobility. Yet at its core, war has always been between humans.
CDS further warned that now the method of war will be changed. Now we are starting a new era, the wars which were fought between humans till now will be replaced by machines tomorrow.
similarly war will be fought
Talking about the second trend ‘accelerating speed’, Anil Chauhan mentioned the advancements in hypersonics, drones and orbital defense systems. The CDS said hypersonics, glide and cruise are being driven by technologies such as partial orbital systems that can orbit the world and stealth technology. Drones with small cross-sections are invisible and cannot be targeted, he said.
Regarding the third trend of ‘Intelligence’, he further said that artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies focus on digitalization of the battlefield.
Coordination with advanced powers of the world
The CDS said, “The third change is the intelligentization of warfare, which includes artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, large language models, supercomputing and edge computing. “The result is large-scale digitalization of the battlefield.”
CDS Chauhan also stressed the importance of moving away from the “catch-up game” with advanced forces. He said, “Our aim is to enter the third revolution in military affairs with the most advanced armies in the world. Achieving this will require a change in mindset and new thinking within the armed forces.”
