West Bengal's share in total rice production declined: Telangana ahead

Mumbai: The trend of rice production in the country has reversed. There has been a significant change in the rice production equation especially in West Bengal. Among the various rice producing states in India, West Bengal was the largest producer of rice and stood first in terms of rice production. The percentage which kept fluctuating has come down to around 9.30 percent in the crop year 2023-24.

Rice production in West Bengal was 158.80 lakh tonnes in 2019-20, it has decreased to about 115.20 lakh tonnes in 2023-24. During this period, the area under paddy cultivation has decreased from 54.90 lakh hectares to 50 lakh hectares.

In West Bengal, consumption of seeds capable of withstanding the changing climate has been low. Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh Vs. Irrigation coverage has increased in the states while it has not increased in West Bengal.
