Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has resigned from the post of Leader of the Opposition in the British Parliament yesterday. On this occasion, he mentioned some memories of Diwali festival and said that during the Prakash Parv two years ago, he was appointed the first PM of Indian origin.
Following the Conservative Party's defeat in the general election last July, Sunak served as interim leader of the Conservative Party until a new leader was elected. Sunak said, “I became the leader of the party during Diwali and I am resigning from the post during this festival itself.”
'I am proud to be the first British Asian Prime Minister'
Rishi Sunak said, “I am proud to be the first British Asian Prime Minister and it says a lot about the values of the British people, our country and this Parliament.” During Diwali in October-2022, Sunak along with wife Akshita and daughters Krishna and Anushka visited the Prime Minister's residence '10 Downing Street' and decorated its stairs with lamps and rangoli for two consecutive years.
British PM Keir Starmer praised
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said all members of the British Parliament were proud that Sunak “represented our diverse country” as prime minister. He also praised the outgoing opposition leader's “hard work, commitment and decency” despite many political differences. Starmer said, “I wish a happy Diwali to everyone celebrating Diwali in the UK and around the world. This is a time to celebrate together and focus on a brighter future.”
