Lok Sabha elections: Congress, which won nine elections, left Sultanpur

Sultanpur, March 12 (HS). Leaders have geared up for the Lok Sabha elections 2024. The party has started releasing the lists of candidates. The heartbeats of the contenders have increased. Leaders are leaving no stone unturned in lobbying to get Goti fit. Till now no party has opened its cards for Sultanpur parliamentary seat. There will be speculations about the results only after the candidates come forward. Interestingly, Congress, which has won this seat in nine elections including one by-election, will not have any candidate in the elections this time, because this seat has gone to SP in the alliance.

SP has fought on this seat six times so far. He used both external and local candidates. But never got success. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress trusted SP and left this seat for them. Now only time will tell which party and leader will the people of Sultanpur crown as victorious this time. However, in the last two elections in 2014, BJP's Varun Gandhi reached Delhi after winning from here. Whereas in the 2019 elections, BJP fielded his mother by giving her a ticket on this seat. She also reached Parliament after winning. In this way, BJP has been in possession of Sultanpur Lok Sabha seat for the last two consecutive times. If the BJP candidate wins this seat even after the SP-Congress alliance, then the record of making a hat-trick will also be added to his account.

BJP got its first success in Sultanpur in 1991 with the victory of Ayodhya saint Vishwanath Das Shastri. Shastri got 1,73,485 votes and nearest rival Ram Singh of Janata Dal got 64,529 votes. The BJP candidate in 1996 and 1998 was Devendra Bahadur Rai, who was the Superintendent of Police of Faizabad at the time of the Babri demolition. In 1996, Mr Rai got 2,38,843 votes and his nearest rival Kamruzzama Fauji of SP got 1,20,559 votes. In 1998, Shri Rai's votes were 2,69,9510 and Rita Bahuguna Joshi SP's votes were 2,05,5030.
