Flight service closed: In view of the possible impact of Cyclone Dana, flight operations at Kolkata Airport will remain suspended for 15 hours. Flight operations will remain suspended from Thursday 6 pm to Friday 9 am. Airports Authority of India (AAI) gave this information on Wednesday. An AAI official on Wednesday said the step has been taken keeping in mind the safety of passengers, airline staff, various equipment and infrastructure.
An AAI spokesperson said, “In view of the impact of Cyclone Dana on the coastal areas of West Bengal, especially Kolkata, it has been decided to suspend air services from 6 pm on October 24 to 9 am on October 25. The weather department has predicted strong winds and heavy to very heavy rain during this period.”
Landfall will start from the night of 24th October
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the cyclone is likely to hit the coast between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha early on Friday and winds can blow at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour. The process of landslides will start from the night of 24th October and will continue till the morning of 25th October. During this period the wind speed can be up to 120 kilometers per hour.
IMD scientist Habibur Rahman Biswas said that Cyclone Dana is currently 570 km from Sagar Island (West Bengal), 490 km from Paradip (Odisha) and 520 km from Dhamra (Odisha).
In view of the threat of cyclone, 56 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in five states including Odisha and West Bengal. A total of 20 teams have been deployed in Odisha, while 13 out of 17 teams have been kept in reserve in West Bengal. Apart from this, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has also been activated.
Appeal to be cautious
For safety during the cyclone, air travelers and people living in coastal areas have been appealed to remain alert and follow the guidelines issued by the administration.
