Seoul: More than five lakh copies of Nobel laureate Han Kang's books were sold instantly. Book store operators said on Sunday that there has been a huge surge in demand for Kang's books. South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for creating poetic fiction that highlights the struggles of human life, it was announced on Thursday.
According to Kyobo Book Center and Yes24, 530,000 copies of Kang's books had been sold as of Sunday afternoon after the award was announced, Yonhap news agency reported. Meanwhile, Kyobo sold around 2,60,000 copies and Yes24 sold 2,70,000 copies. Most of his books are now being sold through preorder.
His book, The Vegetarian, also hit the top three spots on the Don't Part bestseller list. Han is the first Asian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He won the Booker Prize in 2016 for The Vegetarian Novel. He was born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea. He began his career as a poet in 1993 with the publication of several poems in Literary and Society magazine. His first story collection was published in 1995 under the title Yeosu (Munji Publishing Company).
