Israel celebrated Yom Kippur during the war for the first time since 1973. This day is considered the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. It is a major festival of people following Judaism. It is the first time since 1973 that Israel has celebrated the holy holiday amid an active war. The Israeli police had put the country on high alert regarding the attacks.
Even on festival days in Israel, enemy countries are continuously firing rockets at Israel. More than 120 rockets were fired at Israel on Friday. According to the Israel Defense Forces, more than 120 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israeli territories in the early hours of the holy day.
Hezbollah warned
Hezbollah warned Israeli citizens on Friday to stay away from military sites located in residential areas in the northern part of the country. The militant group has accused the Israeli army of using civilian areas as shields for its military installations, especially in major cities such as Haifa, Tiberias and Acre. Since September 23, Israel has intensified air strikes in Lebanon, which are being carried out to eliminate the Lebanese organization Hezbollah.
On 27 September, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and several of his associates were killed in a major attack in the southern suburbs of Beirut. It is noteworthy that on October 7 last year, Hamas had launched a major attack on Israel in which about 1200 people were killed while more than 250 people were taken hostage. It is believed that more than 100 hostages are still in Gaza. Following the attack, Israel launched a military operation in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023 have killed at least 42,065 people and injured 97,886, according to Friday's figures.
What war happened 51 years ago?
51 years ago, a major battle took place during the festival of Yom Kippur, in which Egyptian troops invaded Sinai and Syrian troops invaded the Golan Heights. This battle took place on the holiest day of the Jews. In this, Arab forces hoped to recapture territory lost during the Third Arab–Israeli War in 1967. In this war, once again the Arab countries suffered heavy losses and Israel captured more territory than before. Seeing this, even the enemy countries retreated.
India expressed concern
India on Friday said it is concerned about the deteriorating security situation along the 120-km-long 'Blue Line' along Lebanon's southern border. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFL) revealed on Thursday that its Nakoura headquarters and surrounding bases have been attacked by Israel. UNIFL said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted a surveillance tower at its headquarters in Nakoura with Merkava tanks. In the attack, two peacekeepers fell directly on the tower and were injured. Several Indian peacekeepers are also included in the UN force, although they are said to be safe.
