New Delhi: In a horrific incident that took place in the South Sahara state of West Africa on Friday, people said to be followers of Al Qaeda have killed more than 600 people in a few hours by firing indiscriminately. The situation has become such that there is no space left in the cemetery to bury the dead.
Most of those killed were busy digging trenches around the village on the orders of the army. The reason for digging this ditch is so that members of the terrorist group cannot suddenly enter the small town.
Most of those killed in this attack were women and children. Actually, this massacre is the biggest massacre ever in the country. It is also reported that two militant Islamic groups, Al Qaeda and Islamic State (IS Caliphate) are now competing for dominance over the region (in the South Sahara region) and there are frequent wars between the groups. Innocent villagers and civilians are suffering.
In fact, members of Jamaan Nusrat al-Islam wal Musliminu (JNIM), a branch of al-Qaeda in the Sahara state of Mali, north of Burkina Faso, shot dead villagers on the outskirts of the town of Barsalodho.
According to the UN, about 200 people were killed, while JNIM says 300 were killed. But UN aid workers there said that more than 600 people were killed in the attack.
One survivor of the massacre said that he was digging trenches around the city with his comrades as per orders of the army. There suddenly at around 11 in the morning the sounds of gunshots started coming. I hid in the ditch to escape, then I saw the terrorists coming towards me, so I walked on my stomach and slipped to the other side of the ditch. When I came out, I saw that people were bleeding all around. Many people died in this. Even those who survived were drenched in blood. I crawled behind a bush and hid there until noon.
Another survivor said that JNIM terrorists continued the massacre throughout the day. In the first attack, he killed many people within a few hours. Because terrorists considered him a supporter of their opposing group. After the massacre, we kept collecting dead bodies for three days after those terrorists left. Since the cemetery does not have space to bury more than 600 dead, many people had to be buried outside the cemetery.
