Lucknow, 04 October (HS). Uttar Pradesh's Urban Development and Energy Minister A.K. Sharma gave strict instructions to the civic officials to maintain the cleanliness system, sewerage, drainage, water supply, street lighting etc. of Varanasi.
He said that during the festival season like Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali, Chhath Puja, the number of devotees coming to Banaras from all over the country and abroad increases, in this view, we should strengthen the administration of Banaras city by putting it on a war footing. Ensure cleanliness of Ganga and other river ghats. Maintain proper road lighting. There should be no darkness anywhere on the streets. On Friday, the Urban Development Minister was virtually reviewing the works of cleanliness, street lighting, water supply, sewer system etc. of Varanasi with the officials at the field hostel 'Sangam' of Jal Nigam.
He said that there should be no laxity in cleaning and beautification of a world famous city like Banaras and in arranging other civic facilities. Dirt should not be seen anywhere. The development works taking place in the newly created area of Varanasi Municipal Corporation should be expedited. Man and machine should be used properly in cleaning work, any machine which is broken should be repaired and put back into use. If more equipment and machines are needed, make arrangements for the same. But there will be no compromise on filth in Banaras.
The Urban Development Minister directed Varanasi Municipal Commissioner Akshat Verma to repair the entire street lights of Banaras city during the Navratri festival itself, due to the widespread breakdown of street lights, non-burning and non-functioning of street lighting. There should not be darkness anywhere, road lighting should be good. Out of total 62 thousand street lights in Banaras, one fourth i.e. 7100 lights are faulty. Out of these, out of 38,862 lights installed by ESSEL company, 4400 lights are faulty. This is a very worrying situation. He gave instructions to repair all the street lights ward wise, so that there is no darkness anywhere. He said that no matter which department or agency has installed street lights, ultimately the responsibility of maintenance of street lights lies with the Urban Development Department. Strict action will be taken against any company or department which gets construction work done without permission from the Urban Development Department. Go.
