Jamaat-e-Islami eyes big electoral alliance in Bangladesh | News India

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has started talks with like-minded parties on an alliance for the upcoming parliamentary elections after the fall of Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina government in the country. Jamaat-e-Islami has earlier enjoyed the pleasure of power by joining hands with Bangladesh National Party leader Khaleda Zia. After assessing the political pros and cons, he has broken his more than three decade old relationship with Khaleda's party.

The stain of war crimes on the Jamaat

According to The Daily Star, regional parties are also desperate to join the alliance after ousted Prime Minister Hasina left the country on August 5. Anyway, Bangladesh National Party is considering contesting the next general elections alone. Therefore, now the effort of Jamaat-e-Islami is to bring these parties under one umbrella. It is noteworthy that Jamaat-e-Islami has not been able to erase the stain of war crimes during the liberation war of Bangladesh.

According to The Daily Star, on August 18, Jamaat-e-Islami invited all like-minded Islamist parties to the Al-Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, the capital Dhaka. Jamaat leader Amir Shafiqur Rehman called upon the party chiefs to participate in the elections on one platform. Top leaders of Khilafat Movement, Jamiat-e-Ulamye Islam, Islami Oikya Jot, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Nezam-e-Islami, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis were present in the meeting. Naib-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Khilafat Movement, Abul Qasim Kashmi told that the Ameer of Jamaat said that the parties should have a vote bank. In this regard, Jamaat-e-Islami's Assistant General Secretary Hamidur Rehman Azad says that the elections are still far away, hence it is too early to say anything on the electoral alliance. When elections come, consideration will be given to building greater unity with like-minded Islamic parties. At present, dialogue is being held with these parties for the larger interest of the country.

The stance of Islamic movement Bangladesh is important

Amidst the efforts of Jamaat-e-Islami, on September 21, Mahmudul Hasan, Chairman of Befaq, the largest Qaumi Madrasa Education Board of Bangladesh, has also started similar efforts. They held a meeting in Jatrabari Madrasa. Naib-e-Amir of Bangladesh Khilafat Movement Abul Qasim Kasmi, who participated in the meeting, said that during this, leaders of various Islamic parties discussed about coming on one platform before the general elections. This process has started. The draft of the alliance is yet to be finalized. It is being said that the responsibility of this alliance will depend on the attitude of the Islamic movement Bangladesh. This party has received more than 1 percent of the total votes in the 2008 and 2018 elections. The leaders of Islamic Movement Bangladesh would like him to be the head of the alliance.

Gono Adhikar Parishad also in the fray

Gono Odhikar Parishad of Nurul Haq Noor, former vice president of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU), will also be in the fray in the upcoming elections. It was registered with the Election Commission on September 2. Gono general secretary Rashid Khan said that some small parties are in talks to participate in the elections with our election symbol. Another faction of the party under the leadership of Reza Kibria has also extended the hand of friendship. Top leader of the faction led by the party's predecessor Mustafa Mohsin Montu, Shubhrata Chaudhary, said that the Gonoforum, which was divided into two in December 2021, has re-united under the leadership of Dr Kamal Hussain in August this year. Khilafat Majlish joint general secretary Ataullah Amin has said that smaller Islamic parties including Jomiat-e-Ulamaye Islam, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlish, Khilafat Majlish and Nezam-e-Islam have agreed to come together on one platform. The process of bringing together other Islamic parties including Islami Oikya Jote, Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Jamaat is underway.
