Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India's largest renewable energy company, and Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), the largest private transmission and power distribution company, part of the globally diversified Adani portfolio, today announced that both companies have joined the Net Zero Alliance Utilities (UNEZA).

UNEZA is an international platform to enhance cooperation across the power and utility sectors, accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, and strive to overcome common barriers to realising global net zero ambitions. Operating under the guidance of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, UNEZA was established at COP28 with the adoption of the UAE Declaration of Action. The alliance unites leading global utilities and power companies committed to advancing the development of renewable energy-ready grids, promoting clean energy solutions, and advancing electrification efforts.

It will focus on areas such as improving energy efficiency

Adani Green Energy Limited in renewable energy and Adani Energy Solutions Limited in transmission and power distribution are the first to join this global alliance across their operations in India. As a member of UNEZA, AGEL will focus on areas such as clean power generation, enhancing energy security and improving energy efficiency, while AESL will double its efforts towards developing reliable grid infrastructure for green energy transmission and distribution.

Committed to contributing 10 percent to the country's non-fossil fuel energy target

AGEL Executive Director Sagar Adani said joining the Net Zero Alliance is an opportunity for utilities to advance sustainability goals, adopt innovative approaches, and collaborate with global partners to accelerate the clean energy transition. “As India's largest renewable energy player, we are committed to deploying 50 GW by 2030 and contributing 10 per cent to the country's non-fossil fuel energy target by then,” he added.

Anil Sardana, Managing Director, AESL, said that by joining the Utilities for Net Zero Alliance, AESL will be able to leverage the experience of its global partners and in turn share its know-how in building high-capacity renewable energy evacuation infrastructure. Given the ambitious renewable energy plans of the Adani portfolio, it is important for the company to establish a reliable evacuation network for seamless offtake of renewable energy.

Both AGEL and AESL aim to achieve net zero by 2050

Adani Green Energy has ambitions to grow its renewable energy portfolio from the current operational capacity of 11.2 GW to 50 GW by 2030. The company is developing the world's largest renewable energy plant with a capacity of 30 GW across 538 sq km at Khavda in Kutch, Gujarat, which is almost five times the size of Paris, and when the plant is completed, it will be the largest power plant across all energy sources on earth.

Adani Energy Solutions aims to increase the share of renewable energy in bulk power purchases to 70% by 2030 to enhance its distribution capacity in Mumbai. In addition, the company aims to reduce its direct emissions by 72.7% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels. As part of investments in renewable energy infrastructure, AESL is building a US$1 billion high-voltage direct current (HVDC) line to ensure uninterrupted renewable power supply in Mumbai.
