Ahmedabad News: These days people are dying of hunger in the African country Namibia. There is a shortage of food grains here due to drought. In such a situation, the government has ordered to kill 723 wild animals to satisfy the hunger of the people. This decision has been taken due to the food crisis caused by the severe drought going on in the country. After the Ambani Group's Vantara, more Gujaratis have extended their hands for help. A group from Ahmedabad has taken the initiative to deliver food grains to Namibia, so that the country does not have to kill animals.
Another Gujarati extended a helping hand
Recently, Vantara took the initiative to help Namibia. At that time, Tapovan Youth Alumni Group of Ahmedabad has also extended a helping hand for life in Namibia. The group will send food grains to the people facing starvation in Namibia. A large amount of food grains will be sent from here so that people can get food. For this, the Ambassador of India to Namibia has been contacted and assurance has been given to provide necessary assistance.
Regarding this initiative, the group's managing trustee Himanshu Shah said that food grains will be sent by Tyag Group as soon as possible. The grains will be sent from here as soon as we get the green signal from the Namibian government. We have asked the government to withdraw the animal slaughter order.
Why was the decision taken to kill the animals
Let us tell you that Namibia is facing the worst drought in the last 100 years. People are facing a huge problem of food and water. The grain warehouses have become empty. In such a situation, the government has given permission to kill elephants and other animals under the plan to provide food to the people. A total of 723 animals have been killed under this plan. These include 30 hippopotamuses, 60 buffaloes, 50 impala, 100 blue wildebeest, 300 zebras, 83 elephants and 100 elands (a type of deer). At the same time, more than 150 animals have died. About 63 tons of meat has been extracted from these killed animals.
Will reduce the impact of drought on wildlife
According to Namibia's Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, this is necessary and in line with our constitutional mandate. Our natural resources are used for the benefit of Namibia's citizens. A statement from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism said that it is hoped that killing some animals will reduce the impact of drought on wildlife. There are many areas where animals resort to killing each other due to lack of water.
Animals can attack settlements
Experts say that if resources are not provided to animals, they can attack human settlements and harm people. Therefore, it is very important to reduce the number of animals to deal with drought. Seeing the drought situation, the United Nations should come forward to help. Australia also allowed the killing of kangaroos to deal with drought.
What is Kalinga?
Killing animals in this manner is called culling. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Namibia, weak animals will be selected for killing. Professional hunters have been deployed for this. Some companies have been given the contract. So far 157 animals have been hunted. The government has received more than 56,800 kg of meat from them. There is the largest population of elephants here. Due to which there is conflict among them. Last year more than 300 elephants died due to drought.
