United Nations: India abstained from voting on the resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly ordering Israel to withdraw from the illegally occupied Palestinian territories. The 43 countries that abstained from voting, including India, were Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Britain and Ukraine. Most surprisingly, Ukraine abstained from voting.
In the meeting of 143 countries held on Wednesday, 124 voted in favor of the resolution, 14 against it and 43 countries abstained. According to this resolution, Israel has been ordered to withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories within the next 12 months.
Naturally, Israel voted against this resolution, but so did the US. The US has been consistently supporting Israel. The resolution, which is widely known, also orders Israel to withdraw from East Jerusalem and the occupied territories in the Western Lands within twelve months. It also states that it must follow international rules.
Since Ukraine did not participate in the voting on that proposal, some analysts say, 'Ukraine will object to the 12-month period mentioned in it. Which is also right. Actually, Israel should vacate all those areas and hand them over to Palestine, but the question is whether this will be possible?'
Israel’s U.N. Ambassador-at-Large Gilad Erdan described the resolution as politically motivated and a challenge to Israel’s legitimacy, saying it would escalate tensions in the region rather than help bring peace.
