The 1,643 km long border between India and Myanmar is known for smuggling of arms, clothes and narcotics. According to sources, the border fence will be erected at a cost of Rs 31,000 crore.
On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that fencing work on 30 km of border has been completed. He believes that open borders are at the root of the ongoing violence in Manipur. The Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs has given in-principle approval to fencing the 1,643 km long border between India and Myanmar at a cost of Rs 31,000 crore. Currently, the construction of 10 km border fence near Moreh has been completed. Elsewhere, fencing work is going on on 21 km of border. The India-Myanmar border touches the states of Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal. The central government has abolished the provision of free movement regime on the India-Myanmar border. Earlier under this provision, 16 km near the border. People living in the area could cross the border of the opposite country without any document. As per India's Act East policy, cross-border movement started freely in 2018.
The Union Home Minister is regularly reviewing the situation in Manipur and taking necessary steps.
Two battalions of CRPF are also deployed in Manipur, which is facing unrest. 200 companies of central police forces (100 soldiers in one company) are also deployed in Manipur.
The Manipur government has started mobile shops in 25 mobile vans with the aim of providing essential commodities of life to the people at reasonable prices. Such mobile shops are functioning in all the districts of Manipur.
