New Delhi, March 06 (HS). The central government has given permission to export 4,750 tonnes of onion to Bhutan, Bahrain and Mauritius. Onion will be exported to these countries through National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL). Although there is a ban on export of onions, the Indian government allows them to be exported based on requests from other countries.
In a notification issued on Wednesday, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said that permission has been given to export 550 tonnes of onion to Bhutan, 3 thousand tonnes to Bahrain and 1,200 tonnes to Mauritius. According to the notification, onion has been notified to be exported to these three countries through NCEL. Last week, the government had given permission to export 64,400 tonnes of onions to UAE and Bangladesh.
It is noteworthy that DGFT is a branch of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which looks after the norms related to import and export. On December 8 last year, the government has banned the export of onion till March 31, 2024 with the aim of increasing domestic availability and keeping prices under control.
