The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police raided the call center of a Chinese citizen who was running a fraud business through dating apps and arrested 50 people working there. The Chinese citizens had used crypto currency as a medium to commit fraud. An entire house was rented in Kathmandu to run the call center.
CIB spokesperson SP Havindra Bogati told in a press conference on Saturday that on Wednesday, a raid was conducted in a house in Ekta Basti of Kathmandu on the information of illegal activities. Information was received that two Chinese citizens, who were already under police surveillance in Nepal, had rented a house and were operating a call center from there. The raid was conducted throughout the night on Wednesday and in the next three days the police revealed the entire matter. The two Chinese citizens who were operating this call center were already involved in illegal activities in Nepal. Earlier, they had fled from Nepal and reached Dubai. They were deported from Dubai also due to operating illegal activities there. After coming back to Nepal, these people again became active in their old business.
Bogati said that after interrogating the arrested people, it was found that people living in America, Europe, Canada and Australia were trapped through dating apps under different names. After that, dollars, pounds and euros were deposited from them through different e-wallets. In this way, it has been revealed that the deposited amount was invested in various businesses through crypto. The investigation also revealed that men were trapped through dating apps like Bumble, Muslima, Inshaha, Salem, Muj, Accupad, Alkhatabaaz. For this, more than 40 women were employed in Nepal. Their target used to be mostly Muslim youth. They were trapped through dating apps and were made to deposit foreign currency on e-wallets like Binance and Trust.
The call center operating in Nepal was run from 9 pm to 5 am and was closed throughout the day. At the time when the CIB raided there, about 40 young women were working there. The police arrested all of them. Based on their statements, in the next two days, a total of 10 people including two Chinese citizens and a woman from the Philippines were arrested by the police from different places in Kathmandu.
CIB spokesperson Bogati said that the arrested Chinese citizens have been identified as Thing Chyong and Li Qingning. Similarly, their translator Hanipa Sinsuat, a citizen of Philippines, has also been arrested. 7 other Nepali citizens who helped them in Nepal have been arrested and are being questioned.
