Hong Kong, September 13 (HS). Denmark's Viktor Axelsen entered the second round of the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championship on Thursday. He defeated Su Lee Yang of Chinese Taipei.
Second seed Axelsen, the Paris Olympics gold medallist, won 24-22, 21-6 to enter the quarterfinals where he will face sixth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei.
After winning the match, Axelsen said, “I did not train enough after the Olympic Games. So it is not easy to win two matches in a row. My goal is to get my form back.”
Defending champion Jonatan Christie of Indonesia beat Rasmus Gemke of Denmark 21-12, 21-19 and will next face fifth seed Kodai Naraoka, who beat his Japanese compatriot Takuma Obayashi 19-21, 26-24, 21-11.
Lei Lanxi of China lost the first set but recovered to win 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 over Jeon Hyeok-jin of South Korea. He will face Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong, China.
The other men's quarterfinal will be between Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia and Jason Gunawan of Hong Kong, China.
In the women's singles, third seed Han Yu of China defeated Liang Ting Yu of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 21-13. She will next face fifth seed Aya Ohori of Japan, who came back from a set down to beat Saloni Samirbhai Mehta of Hong Kong, China 9-21, 21-16, 21-12.
