Washington: Rahul Gandhi's controversial statement on Sikhism during his US visit has received support from an unexpected place. Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, leader of the Sikh for Justice (SFJ), which is banned in India, has supported Rahul's statement. This is why the Bharatiya Janata Party is upset.
In an interview in Herndon, Virginia on Monday, Rahul Gandhi said the question is whether Sikhs in India will have the right to wear a turban or a bracelet or live in a gurdwara?
Rahul's statements have angered the BJP and it has accused him of politicising even a highly sensitive issue, while banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannu said that Rahul Gandhi's statements are bold, break new ground and justify the establishment of an independent Khalistan nation.
When Rahul addressed a gathering in Washington DC, he said that there is a conflict going on in India whether Sikhs in India will have the right to wear a turban or keep bracelets or go to the Gurudwara? Most of the people present in this gathering were Sikhs.
While Rahul's statement was immediately lauded by members of the Sikh For Justice group, the BJP strongly opposed it, saying that Rahul's statement shows that the Congress can put the country's defence at stake just for political gain.
