Vietnam: Bridge collapses in Vietnam due to cyclone 'Yagi', 59 people dead | News India

A bridge collapsed on Monday morning due to floods caused by cyclone Yagi in Vietnam. Due to which a passenger bus got stuck in flood waters. At least 59 people died in northern Vietnam. Even though it is less, heavy rain warnings are still being issued by the weather office.

The death toll continues in Vietnam

Nine people were killed in Vietnam on Saturday as Typhoon Yagi struck the country. Another 50 people lost their lives in subsequent floods and landslides. Water levels in many rivers in northern Vietnam were dangerously high.

A passenger bus got stuck in the flood

A passenger bus carrying 20 people overturned in floodwaters after a landslide in Vietnam's mountainous Cao Bang province on Monday morning. Rescue workers conducted an operation with great effort but could not achieve any success. However, a landslide also occurred at this place. Therefore the road was closed. Rescue operations are underway after a steel bridge over the Red River collapsed in Phu Tho province on Monday morning. According to reports, 10 cars and trucks along with two motorcycles also fell into the river. Three people were pulled out of the river and taken to hospital, but 13 others were missing.

The man told his story

Pham Truong Son, 50, said he was crossing a bridge on his motorcycle when he heard a loud noise. Before he knew what was happening, he fell into the river. He said he thought he had drowned and could not be saved. However, he knew how to swim so he ran into a banana tree. He said he held on to the tree until rescuers arrived.

The most powerful Yagi storm of the decade

Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful typhoon to hit Vietnam this decade with winds of 149 kmph, weakened to a tropical depression on Sunday. But the country's weather office has not yet warned that the incessant rain could trigger floods and landslides. Six people, including an infant, were tragically killed and nine others injured in a landslide on Sunday in Sa Pa town, a trekking base famous for its paddy fields and mountains. The death toll rose to 21 and at least 299 were injured.

The administration got the cleaning done

Rain lashed the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, on Monday morning, as workers removed uprooted trees, fallen billboards and power poles. Heavy rain is falling in northwestern Vietnam, with more than 15 inches of rain expected in the region. Initially, three million people in Kong Ninh and Haiphong provinces are expected to be without power, and it is not yet clear when electricity will be restored.
