A report of UNO has been released. The report says that 64,000 migrants have died in the last 10 years. Out of which about 38,400 migrants died due to drowning in the sea. According to the report, the maximum number of 27,000 migrants have died in the Mediterranean Sea.
27,000 migrants die in dangerous Mediterranean Sea
Many migrants try to reach Southern Europe from North America via the Mediterranean Sea. IOM data analyst Andrea García Borja said the Mediterranean Sea is a dangerous area and traveling here proves extremely dangerous. He said data from the Mediterranean Sea looked more deeply than other regions. According to him, monitoring areas like the Sahara Desert was difficult because reliable data was difficult to obtain.
8,500 people could die on migration routes in 2023
In more than half of the cases, IOM was unable to determine the gender or age of the migrant. Where migrants could be identified, more than a third came from conflict countries or countries with large refugee populations. The report suggests that more than 8,500 people died on migration routes worldwide in 2023. IOM says that the year 2023 can be called the most dangerous year in this respect. The figures for the year 2024 can also be scary.
According to IOM, there is a strong need for stronger security capabilities and safe migration routes on these routes. There is a need for greater international law support for migrants in distress, at sea.
