Varanasi, 24 November (Hindustan Times). The 36th death anniversary of freedom fighter Ranjit Singh alias Baba Ji was celebrated on Thursday in Bhatti village of Lohta police station area. Flowers were offered by garlanding the statue of Ranjit Singh in the tribute meeting organized on this occasion. During this, the speakers narrated the struggle and memoirs related to the freedom fighter.

Speakers told that Ranjit Singh went to jail a total of 5 times in 1922, 1930, 1932, 1942 and 1947 in the freedom movement. His name is inscribed in the Kirti Stambh located at Kashi Vidyapeeth Block Headquarters. In the year 1972, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi honored him by presenting him a copper plate on the 25th year of independence. During the unforgettable jail visits of 5 years in the freedom struggle, Ranjit Singh was respected by the fighters like Dr. Sampurnanand, Lokbandhu Rajnarayan, Pandit Kamlapati Tripathi, Nihala Singh. Even the prisoners were his admirers in the jail every day with evening salutations, kirtans and patriotic songs. He got the nickname Baba Ji in the jail itself.

Rajguru Math Peethadhishwar Dandi Swami Anantanand Saraswati, District Panchayat President Poonam Maurya, former MLA Surendra Narayan Singh, former block head Ramakant Singh alias Mintu etc were present in the tribute meeting. The meeting was conducted by Arvind Singh and the guests were welcomed by President Uttar Pradesh Primary Teachers Association Kashi Vidyapeeth Sanat Kumar Singh.
