New Delhi: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was on Tuesday sent to five-day police custody by an Assam court in connection with the assault lodged against him by a woman police officer.

According to PTI, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mukul Chetia sent Mevani to police custody after he was produced before the court in the afternoon.

 

Mevani has been booked under IPC sections 294 (speaking obscene words in public), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault on a public servant in the performance of duty) and 354 (criminal force on a woman). Case has been registered. ,

Six days after he was arrested by the Assam Police in connection with an “objectionable” tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Assam Police on Monday again granted bail to independent Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani by a court in Kokrajhar district. was arrested.

 

The police of Barpeta district has arrested Mevani on various charges including outraging the modesty of a woman police officer.

A woman sub-inspector had filed a complaint against Mevani at the Barpeta Road police station on April 21, alleging that “On April 21, when I arrested the accused Jignesh Mevani along with other police officers from Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar was taking The accused person used abusive words against me.”

 

The Gujarat MLA was arrested for the first time on Wednesday night in connection with an “objectionable” remark against the prime minister, which he made through a tweet on April 18.

Mevani was flown to Guwahati on Thursday morning, from where she was taken by road to Kokrajhar. The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Kokrajhar district on Thursday rejected the Dalit activist’s bail plea and sent him to three-day police custody.

After hearing his bail plea on Sunday, the court reserved its order and sent him to judicial custody for one day and asked the police to produce Mevani again on Monday. Before his re-arrest, Mevani said that this is a deep conspiracy of BJP and RSS.

The Gujarat MLA was arrested from his home state last week. Since the arrest of Mevani, who had earlier promised outside support to the Congress, the party has been holding protests in different parts of Assam terming the arrest as a “conspiracy”. It also sent its legal team to Kokrajhar to look into the matter.
