Mumbai: A new film is in the works based on the short story ‘Salaam Noni Appa’ from actress-turned-writer Twinkle Khanna’s 2016 anthology ‘The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad’. The yet to be titled film will be jointly produced by Applause Entertainment, Ellipsis Entertainment and Twinkle’s Mrs Funnybones Movies.

Sharing her excitement over the project, director Sonal Dabral called the story “progressive. Sensitive… full of wit and observational humour, a hallmark of Twinkle Khanna”.


The ad filmmaker said: “I couldn’t have asked for a better start as a feature film director. I am looking forward to bring this story to life in a way that will not only inspire people but will also be loved by all. ,

Talking about the story’s journey, Twinkle said: “‘Salaam Noni Appa’ from my second book, is based on the relationship between my grandmother and her sister. It was earlier adapted into a lovely play.” Lillete Dubey was in the lead role in the play.


Incidentally, another story from the anthology, ‘The Sanitary Man of the Sacred Land’, was written by R. Balki in the much awaited film, ‘Pad Man’. Twinkle’s husband, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar played the lead character in the film.

Commenting on the development, Sameer Nair, CEO, Applause Entertainment, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to adapt ‘Salaam Noni Appa’, a delightful story that defies tradition, Twinkle’s indomitable wit and love, life. and relationships.”

In a joint statement, Ellipsis Entertainment’s producers Tanuj Garg and Atul Kasbekar promised that the film will “leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling.”

He added: “In line with our track record of spotting the best directorial talent from advertising, we are delighted to have lead ad-man Sonal Dabral in the film.”
