Bengal will have its own education policy as compared to NEP

Kolkata : The tussle between the central government and the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has now reached the education segment.

State Education Minister, Bratya Basu announced late on Thursday that the state government has decided to formulate its own State Education Policy (SEP) and not implement the National Education Policy formulated by the central government.

He told media persons, “The central government, like many other aspects, is trying to impose NEP on various state governments. However, we do not agree to this and hence we have decided to formulate our own education policy of the state.”

A 10-member committee has been constituted to submit a report in this matter in the next two months. It includes Gayatri Chakraborty Spivak, renowned faculty of Columbia University, historian and former Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member, Sugata Basu, former Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, Suranjan Das and Sanskrit language expert, Nrisinh Prasad Bhaduri among others.

Sources in the state education department told IANS that the committee, before submitting the said report within the next two months, would also study the independent education policies adopted by non-BJP state governments like in Maharashtra and Kerala.

Bhaduri said that the state government has every right to make its own education policy. He said, “Anyway, it is a welcome move. There can never be a uniform pan-India national education policy in a country like India with diversity of culture and huge population.

The National Education Policy aims to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education, including vocational education, from 26.3 per cent (2018) to 50 per cent by 2035, as per the central government’s arguments.
