If you are waiting for weight loss chutney then beetroot chutney is a good option. When you are losing weight and want to make a twist in your boring meal with a healthier option then there can be no better food than beetroot. Beetroot is a good source of fiber which helps you to feel full for longer and helps in weight management. The beet sauce turned out to be a bit sweet and sour and, thanks to the garlic and chili, spicy and hot too. Overall how should the chutney be?


Material :

Beetroot , peeled and grated – 1

Oil – 1 and tbsp

Cumin – tsp

Asafoetida – a pinch

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Chana dal – 1 tsp

Garlic , chopped – 5-6 pods

dry red chili 5-6


Tamarind pulp (without seeds and pulp) – 1 tsp

Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

salt to taste


Method: First you have to grind the tamarind pulp coarsely. Soak 2 tbsp in warm water. Place a pan on the gas flame and keep it on medium flame. Heat a tablespoon of oil and add cumin seeds to it. When their color changes and starts crackling, then add urad dal and chana dal to it. Fry till golden brown, then add asafoetida, followed by garlic. After this, wait a few seconds till the garlic turns golden, after that add dry red chili. When it starts to swell, add grated beetroot to it and fry till cooked. It should not take more than 10 minutes. Add a pinch of salt to speed up the cooking process.


After the beet is cooked, switch off the flame and let it cool to room temperature. Then add tamarind water to the beet mixture and make a paste by grinding it. Smooth it out as per your choice. Lastly add salt and sprinkle mustard seeds on top.

This chutney goes well in salad dressings, soup dressings, idli or dosa or appe because of its sweet and sour taste. Hope you all enjoy this recipe and give a new taste to your taste buds.
