Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal, who was admitted to a government hospital here on Wednesday, failed to appear before the CBI, which summoned him for the fifth time in the cattle smuggling case. Mandal, who was asked to appear before the CBI at 11 am, went to the SSKM hospital around the same time complaining of chest pain and uneasiness.
A hospital official told PTI that he was subjected to several medical tests before being admitted in the afternoon. He said that an eight-member team of senior doctors has been formed to monitor the health of the Mandal. Later his lawyer visited the CBI office at Nizam’s Palace and informed the central agency about his inability to appear due to health issues.
TMC’s Birbhum district president Mandal has already dodged the CBI by citing health problems. He reached Kolkata on Tuesday night amid speculation that he would appear before the agency for the first time. Mandal was summoned by the CBI soon after the Calcutta High Court upheld the single bench order, which refused to grant him protection from arrest in the animal smuggling case.
