Mumbai: Government of India blocks 22 YouTube channels The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has directed to block 22 YouTube based news channels for spreading false news to mislead viewers. It has four Pakistani channels. Action has been taken against news publishers broadcasting from India on YouTube for the first time after the notification of IT Rules 2021 in February last year. The Union Ministry on Monday issued an order to block 22 YouTube channels, three Twitter accounts, one Facebook account and one news website.
With this action, the ministry has issued instructions to block 78 YouTube fake news channels and several other social media accounts from December 2021 in an attempt to endanger India’s national security, sovereignty and integrity, public law and order . The blocked YouTube channel had over 260 million viewers. In an official statement, the ministry said that the channels are deliberately spreading false news and misinformation on social media on sensitive issues from the perspective of national security, India’s foreign relations and public order.
The blockers included 18 Indian and four Pakistan-based YouTube channels. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry did not disclose their names. According to the ministry, several YouTube channels were used to spread false news on various subjects like Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir. It was used to create a false post. Therefore, an order has been given to block such channels. It also includes a social media account run by Pakistan. It was posted against India.
Meanwhile, a statement by the central government said that a large number of false content related to the current situation in Ukraine was published by Indian YouTube channels and aimed to endanger India’s foreign relations with other countries. The ministry said the blocked Indian YouTube channels were using templates and logos of some TV news channels, including images of their news anchors. So that the audience can be misled so as to create confusion in the news.
False thumbnails were also used. The video title and thumbnail have been changed time and again to increase the spread of fake news on social media. In some cases, it was also observed that anti-India fake news was being systematically spread from Pakistan. The Government of India is committed to ensuring an honest, credible and secure online news media environment and to thwart any attempt to undermine India’s sovereignty and integrity, national security, foreign relations and public order,” the ministry said.
